GENERAL
INFORMATION:
Located just a 20-minute drive from Cancún, Isla Blanca
has access by the sea to a rich fishing area of over
60 square miles. Vast flats, beautiful beaches and paradise
islands are home to permit, tarpon, snook and bonefish.
This is a quiet area, without any fishing pressure and
virgin natural surroundings. Anglers have an excellent
chance of getting a super grand slam (Permit, Bonefish
and Tarpon or Snook) in a single day or in a few days
of fishing. The fishing area covers the south from the
flats of Chacmuchuc lagoon reaching the north up to
Cayo Ratón, Punta Iglesias and Cabo Catoche (Holbox
Island). To the east, up to Contoy Island.
Isla Blanca has proved to be the perfect destination
for those who want to spend a day or two of fishing
while they are on a family vacation in Cancun or for
those wishing to fish an easy-to-reach destination with
very good fishing and reasonable prices. There are lots
of islands, flats, mangrove channels and creeks that
hold the most targeted species of the Caribbean all
year round.
PACKAGE:
We are offering different fishing programmes. We can
arrange a day trip beginning early in the morning (at
dawn). Our head fishing guide will pick you up at the
hotel where you are staying in Cancun to drive you to
the marina and keep you fishing for 8 hours. A lunch
box (sandwiches, fruits and refreshments) and the transfer
back to the hotel are included. Another programme includes
accommodation in the Intrecontinental Presidente Cancun
located 30-minute drive from the marina in front of
the sea, with a/c and swimming pool. Breakfast are included.
We can also offer a more economical alternative with
accommodation in "El Rey del Caribe" Hotel and Spa in
Cancun, including breakfast. Located a 20-minute drive
from the marina, this hotel offers comfortable air-conditioned
rooms with ceiling fans, well-equipped kitchen, swimming-pool,
Jacuzzi and a lovely tropical garden. These last two
fishing programmes include transfer hotel/marina/hotel
and lunch box.
ADITIONAL
INFORMATION:
The fishing area produces fish all year round but peak
months are March through September. Fishing starts very
early in the morning. We suggest bringing neoprene boots
to wade the flats, lightweight clothes, a wide-brimmed
hat to be protected from the sun, polarized sunglasses,
a lightweight rain jacket, sunblock SPF 40 or higher
and a good fly selection. Anyway, our guides can provide
you with fly tied by themselves, which have proved to
be very effective in the area. They cost from U$S 2.50
to 3 each. If you can´t bring your own gear, we will
provide it for an additional charge of U$S20.- per day.

HOW
TO GET THERE:
Located
just a 20-minute drive from Cancún, Isla Blanca has
access by the sea to a rich fishing area of over 60
square miles.

>
Fly Fishing tackle and
Equipment:
Almost
all fishing at Holbox is from the boat, bring neoprene
wading boots, light weight clothes, a wide-brimmed hat,
polarized sunglasses, sunblock SPF 40 or higher and
a good fly selection.
Rods
Bring 2-3 rods. A good combination is:
--
9-91/2; 7/8 weight rod for Bonefish.
-- 9-91/2; 9/10 weight rod for Permit and Tarpon.
In case you don´t have one, there are rods for hire
at U$S 20.00 a day. Tarpon flies cost U$S 3.00 each
Reels and Lines
We suggest:
-- High-performance reels with a good brake system are
required, capable of holding 200 - 250 yards of 20-pound
backing. Weight forward floating fly lines; an Intermediate
line is recommended for tarpon.
Leaders
For bonefish and permit, use 12-foot knotless leaders,
and 12-pound fluorocarbon shock tippet. For tarpon we
recommend 16 to 20-pound test bimini twist leaders and
50 or 60 pound monofilament hard shock tippet.
Flies
Bring plenty of flies. You can lose 6-10 flies a day
by breaking off fish or on stones.
Bonefish: flies should be light-weight and with
a hook protection. "Gummy Minnow", Clouser Minow, Crazy
Charlie, Bonefish Special, and small crabs tied on hooks
#4 or #6, sand and light-brown (unweighted eyes).
Permit:
The most effective flies among permit are crabs in different
patterns and versions, tied in hooks that shouldn´t
be too big and small hook eyes (they shouldn´t be heavily
weighted), coffee, brown, sand and with long legs. Rag
Head Crab, Brown Special, Velcro Crab and Del´s Merkin
tied on hooks #2 and #4.
For tarpon and snook: streamers, deceivers and
seaducers on hook 2/0 , 3/0 or 4/0 and for Giant 5/0
or 6/0 using Balck Death, Purple Death, Cockroach, Stu
Apte, Seducer or other varieties in black and red, black
and yellow, grizzly, etc.. The Gummy Minnow is a
terrific pattern for tarpon.
